Thanat “Thomas” Singhirunnusorn was born in Bangkok, Thailand, and grew up in Huntsville, Alabama. He currently lives and works in Kansas City, Missouri, where he’s pursuing his BFA in Painting at the Kansas City Art Institute.
He is an interdisciplinary artist. His works span paintings, sculpture, and architecture. He recently finished a solo presentation, “19: Hot, Cold, Heavy, Light” at Arts Letters & Numbers, Averill Park, NY, concluding his residency there.
My practice combines traditional Thai and modern culture. I investigate topics within popular culture that I grew up around and discover the differences and similarities in relation to traditional Thai culture in an attempt to merge the two themes. I work with common and easy-to-access materials, such as cardboard, to replicate traditional materials and create work inspired by ideas and beliefs from Thai art history, combined with values and ideas from popular culture, such as sports. Out of a love for popular culture and a willingness to honor my heritage, I hope to create a distorted sense of value by pulling from various subjects. I aim to create work as a part of tomorrow's makers while using tradition as a jumping point.
